The term community, in biological terms, implies a group of interacting organisms that also share an environment. But the human communities are not based on sharing the environment along but include belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks and various other conditions, which are common and also affect their identities. These identities of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness affect their lives. There are various other definitions of communities and in countries like India; these options go up to millions of categorizations. For Indian women communities and religious groups have often been interrelated since ancient women were allowed to interact only with other women of their communities and castes.
Any kind of interaction with the male gender was restricted to peers and it was also not preferred. But over the past few decades the term 'community' has evolved in different connotations and more women are not becoming a part of communities that they believe in and not because it is imposed on them. These communities may be the small organizations of the condominiums where you reside or it can also be a community which works for a social or political cause. This interaction with adverse communities and groups has made the contemporary Indian women more aware of her choices and has liberated various ideas. These communities help to boost the self confidence of the women and give her an individual identity that has been created by her.
There are various communities coming up in villages and rural sectors also which include educational groups, vocational groups and other similar interacting groups. The rural women are being given an option to emerge beyond the boundaries of religion and caste and encourage a multi lingual and multi communal society. However the rural women are still not joining these groups due to various kinds of social and economic factors but they fail to understand that these communities may actually help them to overcome these factors. In this global village, you need to get over the restrictions of caste and creed to develop and grow as responsible citizens and individuals. These communities are also emerging as popular social groups, where women of different castes and religions meet once a month for entertainment and fun. There are various clubs coming up that encourage this individuality of the modern women and urge them to become members for providing them with a platform for making their identities. |
