The condition of the financial status of women in India is probably one of the worst in countries across the world. On one hand urban women are making their mark by becoming one of the highest pay holders in the country and the rural women are still being subjected to various kinds of financial exploitation. It is said that rural women are not financially independent but is it because they are not working? No, because these women are working equally hard and help their husbands in their family businesses, along with taking care of other household chores. The only reason they area not financially independent is because they are engaged in disguised unemployment, where they are working in the family business, but they are not being paid for the same. Our country has one of the largest networks of bank branches in the world, but in spite of it millions of women are not given opportunities to get loans. Most of the banks were nationalized three decades ago, hoping that their services would reach the poor. But none of these goals have been met and with more than 52,000 commercial bank branches, 14,522 branches of regional rural banks and 100,000 cooperative bank branches, women in rural and urban sectors still need the signatures of their husbands to get loans. But to make small amounts of loans available to women today the government has taken out schemes like micro credits, which is an extension of small loans to women, who are too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. Since they have no assets to offer as guarantee, these loans come as a boon. There are various other facilities being introduced by the government and the NGO's in India to provide vocational guidance and help to such women. These institutions provide basic education to women and guide them through various traditional art and handicrafts along with training in dealing with retailers and wholesalers. More than often the women are already trained in their expert fields and need basic guidance to emerge as independent income earners. Similarly there are various women in the urban sectors who are unemployed in spite of being educated. There are various industries which have special seats reserved for women and instead of wasting their qualifications; these women should indulge in different kinds of vocational abilities and jobs so that they can prove their financial skills also.
