India is the second most populous country in the world and more than half the populations living below the poverty line, the children in India have been the victims of various kinds of crimes. Children are considered to be the gifts of God but hunger combats all forms of goodwill and the children here are prone to all kinds of tortures like child labor, trafficking, ill treatment and even death due to malnourishment. This is what happens in a country of the size of India, which also has over 3 million children living on the streets. Statistics reveal that more than 150 million children working as bonded laborers and 1 out of every 6 girl child, does not live to see her 15th birthday. Despite having national policies for compulsory primary education more than 50% of children do not have access to education. It is always said that the children are the future of the nation, but it seems like an ominous prophecy because even after 60 years of independence, 50% of children are illiterate. India has one of the largest networks of schools in the world and yet children cannot access education in the country. The blame does not go to government alone but also the parents, who discourage education of children, employ child labor and those who are involved in crimes against children. The shape of the Indian economy and social status can be changed only after attaining education for all. The time has come to focus on something meaningful and concrete, which can provide basic education to these children. Else history will be repeating itself where the citizens of tomorrow will be exploited due to their lack of education. If you are sitting and blaming the system then think of the last time you discouraged a small kid from working at your house or at your neighbors. Only collective action can change the fate of these children. Villages and rural areas are the worst effected where death tolls for girl children are the highest. Planning your family is also important in this aspect because if you cannot provide basic needs for your children then it is best to wait a little more before planning a child. Thus it is essential that for improving educational and basic living standards for children in the country, their parents should also be provided with ample knowledge and education.
