The education of women in India is one of the most controversial topics because in spite of constituting about half of the population in India, these women have been a target of hegemonic masculine ideology. This has made them suffer a lot, with denial of equal opportunities, in different parts of the country. But the rise of feminist ideas and other women movements has led to a tremendous improvement of women's condition in recent times. Women are now able to access education and this has become one of most vital demands of women's rights movements. Education of women education in India has been a major concern of both the government and civil society because educated women hold a vital role in the development of the country. Ancient Indian history cites that in the Vedic period women had access to education in India. But this right was gradually lost over the years and it re-emerged in the British period, with sudden interest in women's education in India. Various kinds of socio religious movements led by eminent socialists like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar laid emphasis on providing these rights to women. Many initiatives were taken to make education available to the women of India and after independence in 1947 the government took various measures to provide education to all Indian women. Literacy rate for women grew over the three decades with 22% in 1971 to 54.16% in 2001 and again the growth of female literacy rate is was higher as compared to the male literacy rate. For a developing country like India, the role of women's education in India is vital for the overall development of the country and human resources. It will also contribute in improving their quality of life at home and outside so that they can provide better guidance to all their children. There are certain obstacles, which are being faced in this area and this includes gender discrimination, which needs to be filled up. The male literary rate in India is more than 75% as compared to the female literacy rate of 54.16%. There are still prevalent prejudices like low enrollment of girl child in the schools, child marriage and high drop out rates, which make this situation even tougher. Thus special emphasis is needed in this area so that women are provided education not only in urban but also in the rural areas of the country.
